The discussion focused on how technology, trust and collaboration are reshaping the future of financial services.

Throughout the panel, Scheunpflug emphasized that the real differentiator in banking is no longer access to technology itself, but the ability to adapt quickly and transform organizations effectively.

The tech race in finance will not be won by the institution with the best technology. It will be won by the institution that can adopt and change the fastest.

She highlighted that AI, cloud infrastructure and advanced data platforms are now widely available across the market. What truly matters is an institution’s ability to simplify processes, accelerate decision-making and continuously upskill its workforce.

A central theme of the discussion was the growing convergence between banks, fintechs and technology players. According to Scheunpflug, customers increasingly expect seamless experiences rather than fragmented services.

Customers don’t buy banking products; they want a solution to a life problem

She compared the future of finance to a Formula 1 ecosystem, where hundreds of specialized players collaborate to deliver a high-performance end product. In this environment, collaboration becomes a major competitive advantage.

Scheunpflug also pointed to significant opportunities for mutualisation within the financial sector, particularly in areas where customers see little differentiation. She cited digital identity solutions, shared corporate data utilities and collective action against fraud and cybercrime as examples where stronger industry cooperation could create value for all participants.

Trust and regulation also featured prominently in her interventions. As AI adoption accelerates and cyber risks intensify, Scheunpflug argued that trusted and regulated institutions will play an increasingly important role in preserving customer confidence.

Technology attracts customers, but trust keeps them.

This vision strongly aligns with BIL’s own transformation journey and its recent strategic partnership with Kyndryl, aimed at accelerating the bank’s technology modernization and strengthening its digital resilience. The collaboration reflects BIL’s ambition to combine innovation with operational excellence while continuing to offer clients secure and reliable banking services.

Looking ahead, Scheunpflug shared an ambitious vision for Luxembourg’s financial centre, stating that the country can become “the most trusted financial data ecosystem in Europe.”

The ABBL panel at NEXUS 2026 highlighted Luxembourg’s determination to remain at the forefront of financial innovation by fostering closer collaboration between banks, fintechs, regulators and technology providers, with BIL actively contributing to shaping that future.

A first step into the world of work

Throughout the morning, students were immersed in the daily life of a financial institution. The programme combined learning and interaction, offering a first introduction to financial education, the role of a bank, and the wide range of career opportunities within the sector.

Guided by BIL employees, students discovered how different expertise comes together to serve clients and support the economy.

Learning through people and experiences

A key highlight of the visit was the opportunity to meet BIL professionals and hear about their personal career journeys. Among them was Samy Picard, Head of Wealth Management Luxembourg and President of the Luxembourg Basketball Federation, who shared his experience:

Opening our doors to younger generations is essential. It allows them to better understand our professions, but also to realise that there are many different paths to build a meaningful career.

These exchanges created a dynamic and engaging environment, encouraging students to ask questions and reflect on their own ambitions.

An immersive perspective on banking

The experience continued with exclusive access to areas rarely seen by the public, including a visit to BIL’s vaults and leadership offices. Students even had a moment of exchange with our CEO Jeffrey Dentzer, offering them a unique opportunity to understand his journey, vision and what the day-to-day life of a leader is.

A commitment rooted in education and community engagement

This initiative forms part of BIL’s broader commitment to education, as reflected in its sponsorship and community engagement pillar. By supporting programmes that connect students with the professional world, BIL aims to develop a better understanding of the economy, promote career discovery, and empower young people to shape their future with confidence.

Looking ahead

By welcoming 43 students and their teachers this year, BIL continues to invest in building bridges between education and the workplace. The bank remains committed to supporting initiatives that help develop informed, confident and future-ready citizens in Luxembourg.

| BIL Contributes to Dialogue on Luxembourg’s Attractiveness | https://www.bil.com/de/bil-gruppe/pressroom/news/Seiten/BIL-Contributes-to-Dialogue-on-Luxembourg-s-Attractiveness.aspx | BIL Contributes to Dialogue on Luxembourg’s Attractiveness | |
On 21 May 2026, at the launch of the EY Luxembourg Attractiveness Survey 2026, leaders from across the public and private sectors came together to reflect on the country’s economic outlook and its positioning in a changing European landscape. The event featured a high-level panel presented by Alban Aubrée, Ernst & Young (EY) Luxembourg Country Managing Partner, with the participation of Stacey Feinberg, US Ambassador to Luxembourg, Luc Frieden, Luxembourg Prime Minister, and Jeffrey Dentzer, CEO of Banque Internationale à Luxembourg (BIL).

Within this discussion, BIL contributed the perspective of the financial sector to a broader conversation on competitiveness, transformation and long-term growth.

The debate took place at a time when investment trends across Europe are evolving. While foreign direct investment has recently slowed due to global uncertainties, long-term confidence in Europe remains intact. This creates a more complex environment, where countries like Luxembourg must continue to adapt to remain attractive to international investors.

Against this backdrop, the event highlighted that Luxembourg is entering a new phase of development. Beyond its traditional strengths, stability, openness and a strong financial centre, the focus is increasingly on innovation, value creation and the ability to anchor strategic activities locally

Towards Greater Alignment Across the Ecosystem

A recurring theme throughout the event was the value of open dialogue between public authorities, regulators and private actors. Luxembourg has long benefited from close cooperation across stakeholders, and this remains a key strength as new challenges emerge.

During the panel, Jeffrey Dentzer addressed the implications of ongoing transformation within the financial sector, where technological change is reshaping banking activities and requiring institutions to evolve their operating models.

This transformation presents both challenges and opportunities. For banks, it is not only about adopting new tools, but also about rethinking processes and improving the way institutions work together.

This type of alignment is particularly important in areas such as artificial intelligence and digitalisation, where fragmentation can slow progress and increase costs. A more coordinated approach can help accelerate innovation while maintaining the robustness and trust that underpin Luxembourg’s financial centre.

Maintaining and deepening this dialogue will be essential, not only to respond to immediate pressures, but also to shape a clear and consistent direction for the future of the financial sector. Luxembourg's financial sector cannot remain globally competitive if every institution continues to build the same capabilities independently. The cost of doing so is too high, the talent pool is too constrained, and the regulatory complexity is too deep. What is new is the conviction that we cannot do any of this alone, and that admitting as much is not weakness: It is strategy. Therefore, the question before Luxembourg's banks is not whether the landscape is changing, but whether we have the courage to change with it, and the wisdom to do so together.

Jeffrey Dentzer

Beyond operational efficiency, this collaborative mindset also supports Luxembourg’s broader competitiveness. It enables the country to present a more coherent and attractive environment to international investors, reinforcing its reputation as a reliable and forward-looking financial hub.

Looking Ahead

The debate made clear that Luxembourg’s attractiveness cannot be taken for granted. In a more competitive and uncertain global environment, sustaining it will require continuous adaptation and collective effort.

BIL’s participation in this exchange reflects its engagement in these broader discussions and its commitment to contribute to the evolution of Luxembourg’s financial ecosystem.

Alongside other stakeholders, the bank is part of a shared effort to ensure that the country continues to offer a strong and sustainable environment for investment, talent and long-term value creation.
