Having a Positive Impact

back

The bank aims to have a positive impact on the economy and local communities and thus to pave the way for future generations.

The bank carefully manages its carbon footprint and ensures that it adopts best practice in adapting its administrative and commercial buildings, or when organising business travel for staff.

For BIL, having a positive impact also means making an ongoing commitment to local communities by collaborating with and supporting numerous charities. The bank’s initiatives mainly focus on three themes: the environment, health and education.

Health

Health and well-being are essential for every human being. BIL group provides financial support to NGOs working tirelessly to improve people’s lives and bring them comfort, including via:

  • BIL’s active support for the Luxembourg Cancer Foundation – employees take part in the Race for Life every year in a show of solidarity.
  • Médecins du Monde Luxembourg, which provides medical assistance to the most disadvantaged.
  • The bank displays Art2Cure works in its art gallery and donates the sales proceeds to biomedical research into diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Zellweger syndrome.

Education

BIL recognises the key role of education in personal development and also as a major driver of progress. BIL’s commitment to education can be seen in a number of initiatives. These include:

  • BIL sponsors and supports Jonk Entrepreneuren Luxembourg, which encourages entrepreneurship among young students.
  • The bank offers guidance to participants in the Diplom+ programme aimed at young people looking for guidance about the world of work or higher education or university programmes.
  • BIL collaborates with the Luxembourg School of Business and Management ECG and gives students direct experience of the challenges facing the bank’s business lines via case studies completed under the supervision of bank experts.

Environment

Aware of its responsibility for the environment, BIL monitors its climate performance in order to control energy consumption and waste generation. Among other things:

  • BIL carefully manages its energy consumption and has installed LED lighting in its offices and on the façades of buildings, thus reducing CO2 emissions.
  • The bank has held the SuperDrecksKëscht waste management label since 2008: this label confirms that BIL implements waste collection according to types, environmentally friendly storage and waste processing through an approved recycling channel. BIL is also a signatory to the “Zero Single-Use Plastic” manifesto of IMS Luxembourg – Inspiring More Sustainability.
  • The bank has implemented a paperless policy to reduce and improve its paper usage. All paper is recycled after use. Over the last five years, the number of printers on BIL premises has been reduced by 35%, with digital solutions given priority.
  • BIL is implementing a new vehicle purchasing policy and has introduced a limited CO2 emissions cap for engines.
