BIL Promotes Luxembourgish Art with Monique Becker’s Exhibition

On 24 February 2026, BIL welcomed hundreds of guests at its Galerie Indépendance, for the official opening of Where the Light Goes Quiet an exhibition by Luxembourg artist Monique Becker. Participants had a unique opportunity to interact with the artist and explore nearly a decade of her creation. The exhibition will be opened to the public until 22 May 2026.

Exploring Black as Presence

The exhibition brings together a selection of works that highlight the evolution of an artistic practice shaped by the pursuit of depth, texture and emotion. The title, Where the Light Goes Quiet, evokes Becker’s unique universe, one in which black absorbs light rather than reflecting it, creating a space of silence, density and introspection.

Black is not absence but presence

For the artist, black is never an absence. “Black is not absence but presence,” she says, expressing the essence of her work. Her canvases, built up through successive layers, combine fragility and strength, suggestion and restraint. They invite viewers to look closely, engaging in a sensory experience that unfolds gradually.

A Distinct Artistic Language

Trained notably under Austrian painter Hermann Nitsch, a decisive encounter in her artistic journey, Monique Becker has developed an instinctive, personal pictorial language. Her work has entered several major collections, including those of MUDAM and MNAHA, underscoring her importance within Luxembourg’s contemporary art scene.
